How many body segments does an insect have? What are they? (3; head, thorax, abdomen)

Name one thing you learned about Ancient Greece.

What happened during the Battle of Marathon?

Which word is an adjective: skip, apple, hot, run

History: This week, we learned all about the three main great thinkers of ancient Greece. We also discussed Alexander the Great and what set him apart from other leaders. Next week, Mrs. Brady will come to each classroom to teach a short lesson on the Greek alphabet! When we return from Thanksgiving Break, we will work on our ancient Greece study guide (so keep an eye out for that worksheet, which will be on purple paper) before taking a quick assessment on what we've learned for this unit on Wednesday, December 4th.

Science: This week, we learned about insect anatomy and a few of the many jobs insects around the world have. Scholars were so excited to discover which insects are helpful to our environment, and which can be harmful. Next week, we will learn about Jean-Henri Fabre, a famous entomologist! When we return from our break, we will spend some time reviewing what we've learned this unit. Please keep in mind that all scholars must turn in their Insect Research paper by December 2nd.

Literature: Scholars will hear more Ancient Greek myths and write summaries while learning about Greek gods and goddesses.

Grammar: Students will continue to learn about adjectives and learn about article adjectives. Students will continue to practice their summary and copy work skills. After Thanksgiving break, students will review the different parts of speech they have learned and will learn how to take information and put it in paragraph form.

Math: On Monday and Tuesday, students will review the different concepts learned in math and practice their subtraction facts. After Thanksgiving break, students will continue learning to rename / regroup in subtraction problems and review the subtraction strategies they have learned. At the end of the week, they will complete a math check up.

Warm Regards,

The Second Grade Team

How is a water strider able to walk on water?

How did Spartan boys live after they left home?

How was life different for women in Sparta and Athens?

Name one subtraction strategy we have learned so far.

What tools did we use to practice subtraction?

Poetry: Full recitation of “Windy Nights” is due on Tuesday, November 12th. Watch the word order on the last three lines - it's tricky! The students did a wonderful job reciting "The Cow". We are already looking forward to this one!

History: This week, scholars were excited to learn all about life in ancient Athens and Sparta. Next week, we will continue our study of ancient Greece by learning about the Persian Wars and Olympic Games!

Science: This week, we learned how aquatic bugs are able to walk on water and dive below the surface! We are still waiting patiently for our classroom butterflies to make their debut. Next week, students will learn more about insect life cycles, including complete and incomplete metamorphosis!

Literature: Students will read the last of the classic, The Cricket in Times Square. Chester becomes wildly popular drawing a crowd and business to the newsstand. The Bellinis are grateful for the income, but Chester finds the fame oppressive. What will he decide to do? On Friday, we will begin our Greek Myths unit. We will not have Reading Groups until after we start our new book, which will be after Christmas break.

Grammar: We will continue learning about contractions and review verbs and pronouns. Students will also continue practicing their summary and copy work skills from information learned in History.

Math: Students will focus on different strategies for subtracting such as counting on, subtracting tens and hundreds mentally, and using vertical algorithm. Please check your scholar's homework for completion and accuracy.
