You may send a hat and sunglasses with your child on the field trip day since we will be eating and playing outside after the museum, and please apply sunscreen before dropping your child off at school. The students are still expected to wear their uniform, as they are representing our school. Hats and sunglasses will remain on the bus until we get to the park and not be used in the museum. We will be going to Desert Horizon Park after we leave the MIM. Please be sure your scholar has a lunch in a DISPOSABLE lunch sack or plastic bag, and a DISPOSABLE water bottle. We are very excited for our field trip, and we know it will be a wonderful experience for everyone!
PLEASE NOTE: There is not extra space for parents to tag along on the tour with our group at the MIM. If you are not a chaperone, you will be unable to join our group while at the MIM. You are welcome to meet us at the park: Desert Horizon Park, 16002 N. 56th St., Scottsdale. We will arrive between 11:45 - 12:00. Thank you.
The Kingdoms are hosting a candy drive beginning next week through November 5th. This is a great chance to get rid of left over candy, support our troops, and earn Kingdom points. Be on the lookout for a flyer coming home with your scholar.

Academics:
History: This week, we finalized our study of ancient China. On Monday, students will take a quick assessment to demonstrate their mastery over the content that we learned. We will finalize our study of Asia with our China celebration on Friday! The following week will begin our study of ancient Greece. Students will learn the geography of the area and learn about city-states, as well as the beginnings of democracy!
Science: We had a busy week in Science this week! On Tuesday, students got an opportunity to be Entomologists and make observations about a collection of real insects. On Thursday, we began our study of insect locomotion and learned all about peristalsis. The scholars were so excited to observe peristalsis in real-life when they met our class caterpillars! Over the next few days, we will get to watch our caterpillars go through their life cycle until they become butterflies. Then, we will get to watch them take their first flight as butterflies when we release them!
Literature: We will continue reading The Cricket in Times Square while practicing decoding new text and reading with expression. We will discuss the plot and characters and will discover the literary technique of anthropomorphism. Please send in a copy of this book for your child as soon as possible, if you haven’t already.
Grammar: We will continue learning about comma usage including using a comma to separate cities and states in an address. Students will practice narrating a chapter from our classic, The Cricket in Times Square and write their first original narration for a chapter this week. Scholars will be introduced to contractions.
Math: After scholars have done their chapter assessment, they will have a couple days of cumulative review over addition with and without renaming and review the concepts from chapter one. Students will complete a short cumulative assessment on Friday, November 1st.
Warm Regards,
The Second Grade Team
