Saturday, January 11th: Reading Under the Stars Family Event (5:00 - 7:00 pm) This is not a drop off event. Scholars need to be with parents at all times.

Monday: January 13th - 17th: Book Fair / classes will preview books on Monday and then have an opportunity to purchase books throughout the week.

Math Challenge: Solve the following problem: 5+6+2-4=?

What is the adjective in the following sentence: I saw a green frog hopping on the grass.

Why is it important for a country to describe how a government should work?

Scholars received a Reading Log today with a letter attached. This was placed in their yellow folder. After you read the information, if you have any questions, please contact your scholar's teacher.


Academics:


Math: Students will begin their new unit on Bar Models. This unit has word problems and students will need to decide if they need to add or subtract in order to solve the problems. Students will be bringing their blue math book home for homework. Please check their homework for completion and accuracy. They will first learn about the Part / Whole Bar Model.


History: This week heralded the beginning of our unit on the Constitution. Students learned about what it means to compromise and will continue to learn more about the Constitution and what it took to create this important document.


Science: This week, students got to present their insects to their class. We had so much fun seeing everyone's hard work and creativity! Next week, students will learn the difference between living and non-living things. We will focus on the fact that all living things are made of cells.


Literature: Students will begin reading the classic, The Little House in the Big Woods. Please make sure your scholar has their book by Monday to begin reading with the class. Thank you for those who have volunteered for Reading Groups.


Grammar: Students have received their new poem: The Hayloft. Recitations will begin on Tuesday, January 21st. Students will continue to review the grammar concepts they have learned this year, and they will learn about the conjunction part of speech. On Friday, students will complete a mid-year Grammar Assessment.

Thank you to all who donated items for our winter celebration. Have a wonderful winter break!

We look forward to welcoming students back on Wednesday, January 8th. Dismissal will be at 12:30 as normal.

There will be no clubs on this day.

Students will begin reading logs on Friday, January 10th. Information will be sent home with your scholar on that day.

Academics:


History: The end of this quarter brought our study of the geography of the Americas to a close! When we return from Winter Break, we will begin our study of the Constitution of the United States.


Science: All scholars brought home their Insect Paragraph papers in their yellow folders. Please have your scholar practice reading it over break. They will need to bring it back when we return from break. Presentations will be done on January 8th - 10th. Our next unit will be our study of the human body, starting with a deep dive into the scientific method!


Math: When students return from break, they will review addition and subtraction. They will then begin their new chapter on Bar Models on Friday. For Rocket Math facts, all students will move to subtraction. Please have your scholar practice their addition and subtraction facts so that they can become fluent in them.

Grammar: Students will review the different parts of speech and types of sentences. They will take a mid-year Grammar assessment on Thursday, January 16th. Students will receive their new poem: The Hayloft by Robert Louis Stevenson. Recitations will begin January 21st. 


Literature: Students will be introduced to common sayings that we use with the intent of communicating something in a different way.  Students will act out and/or illustrate each saying that we review. Students will be introduced to Little House in the Big Woods and be reminded to make sure they have their own copy in their desks to read together.

Hello Second Grade Families!


The information you see here is for November 25 - 26 and the week of December 2 - 6.


Please check your scholar's math book for completion and accuracy of the homework pages. As we are now renaming in subtraction problems, please be sure your scholar is showing their renaming as their problem is incorrect if they don't show the renaming.

History: This week, we learned all about the three main great thinkers of ancient Greece. We also discussed Alexander the Great and what set him apart from other leaders. Next week, Mrs. Brady will come to each classroom to teach a short lesson on the Greek alphabet! When we return from Thanksgiving Break, we will work on our ancient Greece study guide (so keep an eye out for that worksheet, which will be on purple paper) before taking a quick assessment on what we've learned for this unit on Wednesday, December 4th.

 

Science: This week, we learned about insect anatomy and a few of the many jobs insects around the world have. Scholars were so excited to discover which insects are helpful to our environment, and which can be harmful. Next week, we will learn about Jean-Henri Fabre, a famous entomologist! When we return from our break, we will spend some time reviewing what we've learned this unit. Please keep in mind that all scholars must turn in their Insect Research paper by December 2nd.

 

Literature: Scholars will hear more Ancient Greek myths and write summaries while learning about Greek gods and goddesses. 

 

Grammar: Students will continue to learn about adjectives and learn about article adjectives. Students will continue to practice their summary and copy work skills. After Thanksgiving break, students will review the different parts of speech they have learned and will learn how to take information and put it in paragraph form.


Math: On Monday and Tuesday, students will review the different concepts learned in math and practice their subtraction facts. After Thanksgiving break, students will continue learning to rename / regroup in subtraction problems and review the subtraction strategies they have learned. At the end of the week, they will complete a math check up.
