9/22/23

Hello, parents and guardians!

Important Dates:

*Monday, September 25th, recitations of "The Secret" begin

*Friday, October 6th, minimum day, students dismissed at 12:30 pm.

*Monday and Tuesday, October 16th - 17th, parent / teacher conferences (a link will be coming soon for you to sign up)

Reading Bags: Reading aloud for 20 minutes each night is a crucial piece of your child's education. Your signature in your child's agenda is your written indication that he/she completed his/her 20 minutes of nightly reading and retell homework. Your child will turn his/her reading bag in on his/her assigned day. If your scholar needs another week to read their book, that is okay. If they finish the book before the week is up, they can read from a book at home.

Rocket Math: Rocket math is coming back! Rocket math will begin the first full week after fall break. Help your scholar now by having them practice their addition facts at home.

Conversation Prompts:
How many tens are in 100?
How many ones are in one ten?

Give an example of a helping verb.
What happened at the end of Sarah Plain and Tall?
How did the clever Rani trick the Raja in One Grain of Rice?

Academics:

Math: This week, students worked on renaming and the standard addition algorithm. Please practice renaming with your child at home! This proves to be a challenging math concept for many 2nd graders. Remind your scholar that ten ones equals 1 ten, and ten tens equals 100! Next week, we will continue working on renaming up to 1,000. Please be sure your scholar is 'showing their work' as indicated in their math homework book and when necessary, using the correct strategy by following the directions such as make a ten, solve using a doubles fact.

History: This week we continued to learn about the country of India and learned about King Asoka. The students did very well recognizing the virtues displayed in the story: One Grain of Rice and wrote their own opinion about being wise and fair. Next week the students will learn about Ghandi and complete a Diwali project and complete their India assessment. Then it’s on to the next country!

Science: Students will learn about evaporation, condensation, and precipitation. Your scholar will also be given some information about clouds and a cloud observation paper. This is a take home activity and is optional. Please expect this information to be in your scholar's yellow folder on Thursday.

Literature: For the remainder of the quarter, we will read and consider some fables and fairy tales. This week, we will read “The Tiger, the Brahman, and the Jackal”, “The Blind Men and the Elephant”, and “The Emperor’s New Clothes."

There are a couple of dates left in the first quarter for Literature Reading Groups. If you are able to come and

take a group of students for reading groups, that would be wonderful. Your scholars' teacher has a link that they can send you if you would like to sign up. We will publish the 2nd quarter dates soon for the reading groups.

Grammar: Next week, students will continue to practice writing complete sentences in their summaries and copying carefully during copy work. Students will demonstrate mastery over nouns, pronouns, and verbs on our grammar quiz. Then, we will move on to learning about the four types of sentences.

Have a wonderful weekend!
