  • We can’t believe we have been in school for 3 weeks already! Time flies when you’re having fun learning. Please continue reading for important reminders and to learn about all the amazing things your scholar will do in the upcoming week.


We will be reading the book: The Boxcar Children this coming week and we will start reading: Sarah, Plain, and Tall Tuesday, September 3rd. Please make sure your scholar has this book and when they bring it to school, please be sure their name is on it.


A few important reminders: 

  • If your scholar wears bottoms with belt loops, your scholar must wear a belt. 

  • Please remember to empty your child’s yellow folder every day.

  • Please remember to check your scholar’s agenda and daily sign the bottom of the agenda. Agendas must go home and return back to school every day. The title of the book they read for homework must be written in the agenda.

  • Please send your scholar with a silent reading book they will keep at school. 

  • Please be sure your scholar has a snack, a well-packed lunch, and water with them every day.

Tell a fun fact that you learned about Japan. 
What was Benny's favorite treasure?

What does Spalding rule 4 say?
Draw the different parts of a plant. 

Ask your scholar how we line up and enter the MPR after recess.


Academics: 
Poetry: Recitation of the entire poem, The Year by Sara Coleridge, will begin on Tuesday, September 3rd. Please practice the poem with your scholar this weekend.
 
Grammar/Writing: Students continued to practice their summary and copy work skills. We reviewed nouns and will start learning about pronouns.


Math: Scholars will take a mid-chapter check up on addition without renaming and then begin to learn addition with renaming. Please continue to check your scholar's math homework each evening for completion and accuracy.


History: This week, students took their first History assessment on the different continents and oceans. We then began our study of Japan and learned about Tokyo and learned about Mt. Fuji. Scholars will take a quiz about Japan on Friday.

 
Spalding: This week in Spalding, scholars began to write spelling words in their notebooks. We took our first Spalding spelling test today and first phonogram assessment.
 
Literature: The Boxcar Children is such a hit in class; scholars are enjoying reading the book.We continued our focus on character analysis as well as summarizing each chapter we’ve read so far. 


Science: This week in science, we began our study of the plant and butterfly life cycles and continued to review animal life cycles. Next week, scholars will learn about and label the different parts of a plant and dissect Lima beans and lily flowers. We will have a life cycle quiz coming on Thursday, 9/05.

Hello Parents, 
Parents, please be aware that this blog site is for your benefit and should not be viewed by your student. We don't want to spoil the discovery of learning!


Important Dates:


Tuesday, August 13th: Picture Day

Wednesday, August 14th: Curriculum Night 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm


 The first full week of school was beautiful! Your students are learning our classroom procedures, working on perseverance, and making new friends. 


Please make sure your scholar has a snack with them everyday and if they are wearing anything with belt loops, a belt is required, and shirts need to be tucked in at all times.
 
We will begin tracking homework this week for a grade. Scholars will be given a math, Spalding, and reading homework grade. Please sign the bottom of your child's agenda and include the title of the book they read for homework.
 
Please send The Boxcar Children on Monday if you have not done so already. We will start reading the book this Monday, August 12th.


Weekly folders with assessments and other papers will be sent home beginning the week of August 19th. The specific day the folder will be sent home will be up to each teacher. There will be a signature page for you to sign and you will need to sign any papers that are stamped and keep at home any papers that don't need to be signed.
 
Please send a silent reading book that your scholar can keep at school.

Upcoming Events: 
 
Curriculum Night: Wednesday, August 14th, 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm.
We would love to have you join us to discuss your child's upcoming year of learning. Curriculum Night will begin in the Archway MPR (multi-purpose room). Afterwards, you will join your child's teacher in her classroom for some information about our curriculum, parent and student expectations, and classroom procedures. A lot of information is given on Curriculum Night so please make plans to attend.
 
Picture Day: Tuesday, August 13th, Information has been sent home with your child in their yellow folder.

Studies: 
Poetry: You will find our first poem The Year by Sara Coleridge in your child's yellow folder on Monday, August 12th. Recitation of the first 4 couplets will take place on Monday, August 19th. This is simply a memory check and is not graded. We will have a second memory check on August 26th for the first 8 couplets. We recommend practicing daily. Recitation of the whole poem will be the week of September 2nd.

Students will say the poem in a group with 2 other students. They will be graded on the section that they say. Students need to know the whole poem.
 
Grammar: Students have been learning about nouns this week and will continue next week learning about common and proper nouns as well as proper capitalization in names, titles, and dates. Students are also taking their knowledge of what they have learned in history and will write a summary about continents and practice their copy work skills.
 
Math: Students reviewed first grade math concepts to see what they could remember after summer break! They did a lovely job, and we're looking forward to moving on to our 2nd grade concepts. Next week, we will work on addition within 1,000 without and with regrouping. Students will use manipulatives, read books, learn to spell and match word forms, and work on place value. Students will learn many strategies for adding. Please note: Students will begin bringing home their math homework book and will have specific pages listed in their agenda that need to be completed for homework. Please watch the math homework page numbers carefully as we are changing the order of some of the chapters. Please check their work for accuracy and to be sure they completed the pages that they needed to.
 
History: Students have been reviewing the continents and oceans and learning how to use maps and cardinal directions. Next week, we will learn about land forms. We have our first assessmenton continents and oceans on Monday, August 19th.  You will find a map labeled with the continents and oceans on purple paper in your child's yellow folder on Monday. Please review the map at your convenience with your scholar in preparation for the quiz. 
 
Spalding: We are reviewing the phonograms. Please dictate and have your child write the phonogram as homework. Thank you. 
 
Literature: Students will begin reading The Boxcar Children on Monday..We will work on predictions and character analysis. 
 
Science: We are studying Cycles in Nature to kick off Science. Students will learn about living and non-living characteristics and a basic life cycle. We will study the frog cycle first.
