11-1-24

Hello, parents!

It’s that time of year again when sweaters and jackets will be worn by scholars. Please write your scholar’s name on the tag inside. Keep in mind that outerwear jackets that do not have the school logo will not be worn inside the classroom and will need to be put away after they come into class. Solid navy blue sweaters / cardigans may be worn in the classroom.

*Please do not send candy for your scholar’s snack. You may send one piece in their lunch if you wish. Scholars work better when they have a nutritious snack. Thank you.

Academics

History: We had so much fun closing out our study of Asia with our China Celebration. Thank you to everyone who made this event such a success! Next week, we will begin our study of Ancient Greece.

Science: This week, scholars learned more about insect locomotion. We also had an exciting event occur inside the classroom: our caterpillars began forming their chrysalises! Over the next few days, we will observe how these change and harden until our butterflies are ready to make their debut.

Literature: We will read chapter 10-12 of the classic, The Cricket in Times Square. Students will begin working on independent narrations of chapters from this book.

Grammar: Students will learn about contractions and learn to change two words into a contraction and a contraction back into its full form. The poem "Windy Nights" by Robert Louis Stevenson will be recited the week of November 12th.

Math: Students will begin their chapter on subtraction this coming week. Please check your scholar's homework for completion and accuracy. Students will be learning various strategies to subtract as they learned different strategies for adding. Please look over the math chapter letter that will be sent home as it will give ideas for your scholar to do as we are going through the chapter.

Sincerely,

The Second Grade Team
